The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a completely disappointing season where they didn’t make the playoffs. While injuries sincerely performed an element, the Niners truly didn’t play properly enough.
Deebo Samuel had a down year and has since asked a trade. There’s every other key weapon for the 49ers additionally generating trade interest—wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
Via Dianna Russini of The Athletic:
“As the 49ers continue to navigate a looming Brock Purdy extension and an aging roster, I’m instructed teams have expressed interest in trading for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.”
Aiyuk, of course, was involved in trade rumors last offseason as contract talks with the 49ers hit a standstill. He finally inked a brand new deal really worth $120 million across four years; however, he performed in 7 games earlier, ripping both his ACL and MCL. San Francisco’s priority in the meanwhile is absolutely extending Brock Purdy, but he obviously desires weapons around him.
Aiyuk keeps getting better properly from surgery, as GM John Lynch revealed this week at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis:
“I realize that anecdotally, he’s doing clearly nicely,” Lynch stated. “Our trainers who’ve been with him say he’s doing thoroughly. He’s putting in the work; that’s what you need to do. And like I’ve usually stated, the real top-end athletes tend to heal at a little faster rate, and I think that’s happening with Brandon as nicely.”
In 2023, Aiyuk became the 49ers’ top alternative, reeling in a team-high-quality 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and 7 touchdowns. There’s no doubt he might be a critical piece again while healthy. Considering they did provide him a big extension, it feels unlikely San Francisco will sincerely engage in change talks and move him.
But something is feasible in today’s NFL. For the time being, Purdy’s destiny is the focus for the 49ers front office.
